No internal probe. No needles. This prostate ultrasound is performed through the skin of your lower abdomen.
Our ultrasound specialist applies gel and gently moves a handheld probe over your lower abdomen to obtain images of the prostate and bladder. Most patients find the scan comfortable. You may feel light pressure from the probe or some discomfort from having a full bladder. This is a transabdominal ultrasound; nothing is inserted into the rectum.
How to prepare
Arrive with a comfortably full bladder and do not urinate just before the scan. A full bladder helps the specialist obtain the images needed for this type of examination. If keeping your bladder full is difficult, please call our office for instructions.

What can the ultrasound show? The scan allows our specialist to assess the size and appearance of the prostate and look for findings such as enlargement or calcifications. It may also show changes that could be associated with inflammation. Ultrasound findings alone cannot confirm prostatitis; Dr. Bubucea interprets them alongside your symptoms, examination and other test results.
